The 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee has 6 recalls, the most serious being a supplemental restraint system defect where the front airbag, side curtain airbag, or seatbelt pretensioner can deploy without a crash, startling the driver and raising the risk of a collision.
Three separate recalls involve fire risk from fuel leaking during or after a refueling event. On vehicles fitted with a brush guard, the onboard refueling vapor recovery valve can detach in a crash and allow fuel to escape. On other vehicles, a fuel inlet check valve can stick partially open and let fuel spill out of the filler tube during refueling. A third fuel system issue involves a misrouted vapor recovery vent hose that can allow water into the charcoal canister, also causing fuel to spill at the filler tube. In all three cases, spilled fuel near an ignition source can lead to a fire. There is also an electrical concern: the plastic blades of the engine cooling fan can break apart and punch through the fan shroud, posing a risk to anyone near the engine with the hood open.
