The 2009 Kia Borrego has 5 recalls, the most serious being a brake pedal mount that can break off in a collision, leaving the driver unable to brake a still-moving vehicle and raising the risk of a second impact.

A separate structural concern involves the headliner plates along the roofline, which may not be properly secured. If the side curtain airbags deploy in a crash, one or more of these plates can detach and strike an occupant inside the cabin. There is also a lighting compliance issue: the daytime running lamps are wired in a way that turns off both of them when either turn signal is activated, reducing the vehicle's visibility to other drivers during a lane change or turn. The remaining recall is a labeling issue on Canadian-market vehicles, where the tire and rim information on the compliance label appears in English only rather than in both English and French as required; this does not affect how the vehicle operates.
