The 2009 Mazda6 has 15 recalls, the most serious being a passenger-side frontal airbag inflator that can rupture and send metal fragments into the cabin, causing serious injury or death.
This airbag inflator issue has a long history on this vehicle: prior repair attempts using replacement inflators of the same design did not resolve the problem, and those replacements are covered by their own recall. There is also a separate airbag concern where the airbag control unit can corrode internally due to improper coating, causing the airbag warning light to illuminate and preventing airbags and seatbelt pretensioners from deploying in a crash.
On the fuel system side, a particular spider species can weave webs inside the evaporative canister vent line, blocking it and causing the fuel tank to build up excessive negative pressure. Over time this stress can crack the tank and allow fuel to leak, raising the risk of fire. This recall specifically affects 2.5L engine models.
Two structural concerns involve corrosion: the passenger-side lower control arm mounting point can rust and weaken, causing unexpected steering changes, and the front crossmember can rust in vehicles regularly exposed to road salt.
Door security is a recurring theme across several recalls. Door handles can stick or latch mounting screws can loosen, in either case allowing a door to swing open while driving.
