The 2000 Mazda MPV has 13 recalls, the most serious being a fuel leak risk from mismatched fuel injectors and intake manifold that can start an engine compartment fire.
A separate engine concern affects vehicles with the 2.5L V6: in extreme cold (around -30 to -40 degrees Celsius), the throttle valve can freeze and prevent the engine from slowing down when the driver lifts off the accelerator, though pressing the brake pedal can still bring the vehicle to a stop. There is also a recall involving the cruise control actuator cable, which can break and cause the cruise control to malfunction; this includes vehicles that had the cruise control previously repaired, as the replacement cable may also be defective.
On the chassis and safety side, certain vehicles without anti-lock brakes have a brake pipe layout that does not meet stopping distance requirements if the brake system suffers a partial failure, meaning the van may take significantly longer to stop. The rear door child lock mechanism can collect dust and fail to latch fully, allowing the door to swing open while driving. The rear liftgate stay dampers can also rust and seize, causing the stud bolts to snap and the liftgate to drop unexpectedly during use.
The remaining recalls cover tire labeling: some vehicles carry incorrect or non-compliant cold inflation pressure labels, and the powertrain control module on certain Canadian-market vehicles has programming that does not meet emissions requirements.
