The passenger airbag recall stems from the seat's occupant classification sensor, which determines whether to deploy the airbag and at what force. If that sensor misreads the front passenger, the airbag may not deploy correctly in a collision, leaving the occupant without full restraint protection. On the steering side, water can get into the electric power steering control unit and cause it to shut down, cutting off the assisted steering. When that happens, the steering wheel becomes significantly harder to turn, which can make the vehicle difficult to control, particularly at lower speeds or during parking maneuvers. There is also an engine concern specific to this model: a software conflict between the engine control unit and the transmission control unit can cause the engine to stall when the driver brakes to a stop or accelerates after an automatic engine stop-start cycle. A stall at an intersection or during acceleration from a stop creates an unexpected loss of power that other drivers may not anticipate.
