15 recalls across 8 model years
The Mercedes-Benz AMG S63 has 15 recalls spanning 2014 through 2021, with the most serious being a turbocharger oil feed line that can leak on 2018-2019 models, putting engine oil in contact with hot exhaust components and raising the risk of an engine fire.
On 2019 models, the automatic emergency braking radar can become impaired and fail to apply partial or full braking when a collision is imminent. That same year, seatbelt tensioners can fail to activate in a crash, reducing occupant restraint. The 2017 model year has a related seatbelt issue where front pretensioners may not fire correctly in a crash, again leaving occupants less protected.
The 2018 model year has two driver assistance software problems: the lane keeping assist may not intervene during an unintended lane departure above 65 mph, and the hands-off detection system can malfunction, allowing the active steering assist to stay engaged even when the driver's hands leave the wheel for an extended period. Both issues carry over in some form into 2019 production.
On the structural side, 2014-2020 models are subject to a roof panel bonding recall where the front panel between the windshield and panoramic sunroof can detach and become a road hazard. A separate but related issue covers vehicles where a prior repair of that same panel was not completed correctly, allowing the panel to come loose again; this affects 2014-2016 production.
Seatbelt hardware issues appear across several years. The 2016-2017 coupe and convertible body styles have seat belt extenders that may not retract and can break in a crash. On 2015 coupe models, the left and right front seatbelts may have been installed on the wrong sides, affecting how they lock in a crash.
Going back to 2014-2016 production, a software error in the engine control unit can cause the vehicle to stall when coasting to a stop, which can be mistaken for the normal auto-stop function. The 2016-2017 model years also have low-beam headlights that may be misadjusted from the factory, reducing forward visibility at night. Covering 2017-2021 models, the emergency call system can either send responders to the wrong location or fail to connect entirely after a crash.
