The 2019 Mercedes-Benz E Class has 7 recalls, the most serious being two separate fire risks: loose turbocharger oil line screws that can leak oil onto hot engine surfaces, and a wiring harness that can short-circuit and cause a fire even when the vehicle is parked and off. The wiring issue affects 4Matic all-wheel-drive models, and prior repair attempts on some vehicles did not fully resolve the problem, requiring a second fix.
On the occupant safety side, certain E 53 and E 63 S models have two related concerns: the front passenger seat may lack a forward travel limiter and sit too close to the dashboard, raising the risk of injury when the airbag deploys, and some of those same AMG models may have been fitted with an incorrect driver airbag that may not deploy properly in a crash.
Two recalls involve emergency systems. In a crash, the trunk-mounted 12-volt battery can shift and lose its electrical connections, disabling post-crash features like automatic door unlocking, hazard lights, seat adjustment, and emergency calling. Separately, the SIM card in the emergency calling module can disable itself, meaning pressing the SOS button or being in a crash may not reach emergency services. A software issue can also cause the instrument cluster to briefly reset while driving, momentarily switching off lighting and warnings.
