The 2016 MINI Clubman has 4 recalls, the most serious being two related issues with the side curtain airbags, which may fail to deploy correctly in a crash and leave front-seat occupants without protection.
The airbag concerns stem from separate filing: in one case, the fabric cover may not have been perforated correctly, preventing the airbag from breaking through on deployment; in the other, the airbag may not inflate into its intended position. Both issues reduce protection in a side-impact collision. There is also a recall covering certain aftermarket Class 1 trailer hitches sold for this vehicle: the mounting points may not provide enough support, causing the hitch to sag or detach under load and raise the risk of a crash. On the lighting side, the rear inner brake lights built into the bumper switch off when the turn signal is activated, which can reduce visibility to drivers behind the vehicle when braking and signaling at the same time.
