The 2012 Nissan Altima has 5 recalls, the most serious involving suspension bolts that can work loose and fall out entirely, leaving the driver unable to steer the vehicle.
Two separate suspension recalls cover different production windows: one involves the transverse link bolt, and the other covers both the transverse link and power steering rack bolts. In either case, a bolt backing out completely can cause sudden loss of directional control. The remaining three recalls all involve airbags that may fail to deploy in a crash. The front airbag control unit on certain vehicles was assembled incorrectly and may not trigger the airbags at all during a collision. On the side curtain airbag side, two overlapping recalls cover the same basic failure: the inflators may not produce enough force to fully deploy the curtains, leaving occupants without side-impact protection when they need it.
