The 2008 RAM 3500 has 5 recalls, the most serious involving the steering linkage: the left tie rod assembly or drag link connection can fracture, causing sudden and complete loss of steering control.
Multiple components in the steering system can fail in similar ways. The left outer tie rod ball stud and the drag link's inner tie rod attachment to the pitman arm are both at risk of fracturing, leaving the driver unable to steer. In some cases, the steering damper bracket can also shift on the linkage and restrict how far the wheel can turn in one direction. These issues only apply to 4x4 configurations and cab chassis variants.
On the electrical side, the 220-amp alternator can fail without warning, either stalling the vehicle or short-circuiting in a way that can cause a fire. There is also a wiper motor concern: water can get into the motor and cause partial or complete loss of wiping ability, reducing visibility in rain or snow.
