The 1988 Renault Medallion has 3 recalls, with the two most serious involving a potential instrument panel fire and an engine that can race uncontrollably at idle, both of which can result in loss of vehicle control or a cabin fire.
A loose connection at the fuse block can build up electrical resistance, overheat, and ignite the wiring and fuse block behind the instrument panel. Separately, a small spring in the throttle cable assembly can slip out of position, causing the throttle to open further than intended and the engine to rev well above idle speed, making the vehicle difficult to control. The third recall involves the heater core, where a failing end cap can allow steam from the cooling system to vent directly into the passenger compartment, fogging the cabin and reducing the driver's visibility.
