The 2006 Toyota Corolla has 6 recalls, the most serious being a defective passenger-side airbag inflator that can rupture in a crash, sending metal fragments into the cabin and potentially causing serious injury or death.
Three separate recalls address this airbag inflator problem. One specifically affects vehicles originally sold or registered in high-humidity regions like Florida, Hawaii, and the Gulf Coast, where moisture accelerates the failure. A third recall targets vehicles whose passenger airbag assembly was already replaced under a prior recall, as the replacement part can fail to unfold correctly at high temperatures and may not inflate properly in a crash.
On the engine side, certain two-wheel-drive models with the 1ZZ-FE engine have an engine control module with circuit board components that can crack, leading to a range of potential engine warnings and operational problems. There is also a seat heater concern for vehicles equipped with aftermarket heated seats distributed by Southeast Toyota: the copper heating element can short circuit and start a fire.
