The 2013 Volvo VHD has 4 recalls, the most serious involving a ball joint that can corrode and wear to the point of complete steering failure, a parking brake that can drag when it should be fully released and overheat enough to start a fire, and a transmission feature that can leave the drivetrain disengaged and extend stopping distances.

The Eco-Roll feature, designed to let the truck coast in neutral to save fuel, may not reconnect the drivetrain when needed, meaning the engine's braking effect is gone and the truck takes longer to stop than the driver expects. On the brake side, the parking brake chamber can leak air pressure internally, causing the brake to stay partially applied even when released. That friction builds heat in the brake components over time, and the accumulated heat can be enough to ignite surrounding materials. The steering concern affects trucks with non-greasable drag links: the ball joint seals can allow water and road grime past the protective barrier, corroding the joint and grinding it down until it fails entirely, at which point the driver loses the ability to steer. There is also a lighting concern on trucks equipped with snow plow lamp preparation kits, where the snow plow headlights can be switched on independently while the marker lights and tail lamps stay off, making the truck much harder for other drivers to see from the sides and rear.
