The 2012 Volvo VHD has 5 recalls, with the most serious being a driveshaft that can fracture along its weld seam under load, potentially severing and causing serious damage to the drivetrain and nearby components.

Two other recalls involve drivetrain and braking issues that can affect vehicle control. On trucks equipped with the Eco-Roll feature, the drivetrain may fail to re-engage after the system coasts the truck in neutral, which extends stopping distance at highway speeds. On the brake side, the parking brake chambers can leak air pressure, causing the brakes to drag even when released. That friction builds heat in the brake components and can lead to a fire.

Steering is also a concern: trucks equipped with non-greasable drag links can develop corroded ball joints as water and contaminants work past the seals. Over time, that wear can cause the ball joint to fail entirely, resulting in a complete loss of steering control.

A lower-severity recall applies to vehicles fitted with snow plow lamp preparation kits. The snow plow headlights can be switched on independently of the marker lights and tail lamps, leaving the sides and rear of the truck unlit. The high beam indicator also fails to alert the driver when the snow plow high beams are active, so the driver may not realize the rest of the exterior lighting is off.
