The 2017 Volvo VNL has 8 recalls, the most serious being multiple issues that can cause wheel or steering separation: front and rear wheel hubs may fail under load and shed a wheel, and a missing roll pin on the steering shaft can cause complete loss of steering control.
The wheel hub concerns appear across both the front and rear axles, where hubs rated below the actual axle weight can fail prematurely, sending a wheel free from the truck and creating a serious hazard for nearby traffic. The steering shaft issue affects trucks where a roll pin was omitted during assembly, allowing the lower shaft to disconnect from the junction block and leaving the driver with no steering input.
On the engine and fuel side, trucks equipped with Cummins ISX15 or X15 engines can develop a blockage in the fuel cooling circuit that causes a fuel line to burst and spill fuel onto the road. A separate engine concern affects trucks with certain Cummins ISX12 or ISX15 engine computers that can short internally, blow a fuse, and stall the engine without allowing a restart.
The remaining recall involves brake system software: incorrect software controlling the air dryer can allow oil and water to contaminate the air brake system, reducing braking performance.
