DUE TO UNDERSIZED GRINDING AT THE TIME OF MANUFACTURE, THE REAR BRAKE CENTRE FLEX HOSES COULD SEPARATE FROM THE END FITTINGS WHEN SUBJECTED TO THE PULL FORCE REQUIRED BY CMVSS 106-74. TENSILE STRANGTH TEST. SUCH A SEPARATION WOULD RESULT IN LOSS OF BRAKE FLUID AND A PARTIAL LOSS OF BRAKING ACTION. SHOULD THIS HAPPEN WHILE THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION, AT A TIME WHEN MINIMUM STOPPING DISTANCES ARE REQUIRED, A VEHICLE CRASH COULD OCCUR WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING.
ON VEHICLES WITH OPTIONAL FRONT SEAT RECLINERS, THE UPPER SHOULDER SCREW THAT ATTACHES THE DRIVER'S SEAT BACK FRAME TO THE RECLINER MECHANISM MAY BE SUSCEPTIBLE TO FATIGUE FRACTURE. IF FATIGUE FRACTURE OF THE RECLINER UPPER ATTACHMENT SCREW WERE TO OCCUR ON THE DRIVER'S SEAT, THE SEAT BACK COULD ROTATE REARWARD TO A NEAR HORIZONTAL POSITION WITHOUT WARNING POTENTIALLY AFFECTING THE DRIVER'S CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE.
THE FLEXIBLE ENGINE COOLING FAN BLADES MAY FATIGUE CRACK AND SEPARATE FROM THE FAN ASSEMBLY. FAN BLADE SEPARATION MAY DAMAGE UNDERHOOD COMPONENTS AND, IF THE HOOD IS OPEN, INJURE PERSONS IN THE VICINITY OF THE VEHICLE.
VEHICLES AFFECTED ARE THOSE WITH 302, 351, AND 400 C.I.D. ENGINES WITH AIR CONDITIONING.
THE FRONT SLEEVE BUSHINGS OF THE COOLING FAN MOTORS ARE SUSCEPTIBLE TO EXCESSIVE CORROSION IN AREAS OF HIGH ROAD SALT USE. THIS MAY INCREASE THE ROTATIONAL FRICTION OF THE FAN MOTOR OR RESULT IN SEIZURE OF THE ARMATURE SHAFT TO THE BUSHING. EITHER CONDITION MAY DRAW CURRENT IN EXCESS OF THAT OF A NORMALLY OPERATING MOTOR BUT LESS THAN REQUIRED TO OPERATE THE FUSE LINK. THIS COULD OVERHEAT THE MOTOR WIRING CIRCUITRY AND POSSIBLY RESULT IN AN UNDERHOOD OR INSTRUMENT PANEL FIRE. VEHICLES AFFECTED: CARS NOT EQUIPPED WITH FACTORY AIR CONDITIONING. UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS, THE PARKING PAWL MAY NOT ENGAGE THE PARKING GEAR WHEN THE GEAR SELECTOR IS MOVED TOWARD PARK LEAVING THE VEHICLE FREE TO ROLL IF LEFT ON A GRADE WITHOUT THE PARKING BRAKE ENGAGED. ALSO, ABNORMALLY SLOW MOVEMENT OF THE SELECTOR LEVER FROM REVERSE TO NEUTRAL MAY NOT DISENGAGE THE REVERSE GEAR IN THE TRANSMISSION.
VEHICLES AFFECTED: PASSENGER CARS WITH 2.4L DIESEL ENGINES AND ZF AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS.
WHEN SEVERELY LOADED BY A FRONTAL IMPACT, THE SEAT BELT WEBBING MAY CONTACT THE LEADING EDGE OF THE FRONT SEAT-BACK STELL REINFORCEMENT PLATES. THIS MAY CAUSE THE SEAT BELT WEBBING TO BE ABRADED, CUT OR COMPLETELY SEVERED, THEREBY SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASING THE RISK OF SERIOUS PERSONAL INJURIES.
STATION WAGONS ONLY. THE REMOTE TAILGATE LOCK RELEASE ON THESE VEHICLES IS DESIGNED SO THAT THE TAILGATE LOCK CAN BE RELEASED ONLY WHEN THE TRANSMISSION IS IN PARK. DUE TO AN ELECTRICAL WIRING ERROR THE REMOTE RELEASE BUTTON CAN BE ACTIVATED WHILE THE VEHICLE IS MOVING, ALLOWING THE TAILGATE TO OPEN. THIS MIGHT RESULT IN INJURIES TO PASSENGERS IN THE REAR COMPARTMENT AREA.
THE BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER HAS A BUILT IN PROPORTIONING VALVE WITH A "C" CLIP, LOCATED AT THE END OF THE VALVE SPOOL, ACTING AS A STOPPER. IMPROPER INSTALLATION OF THE CLIP MAY CAUSE THE CLIP TO DISENGAGE ALLOWING THE VALVE SPOOLS AND COMPONENTS TO BE PUSHED OUT AFTER REPEATED STRONG BRAKE APPLICATION RESULTING IN POSSIBLE LOSS OF BRAKE FLUID AND BRAKE FUNCTION.
THESE VEHICLES MAY HAVE A DEFECTIVE DIFFERENTIAL PINION SHAFT WHICH WOULD CAUSE REAR AXLE LOCK-UP AND LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL. VEHICLES AFFECTED: LIMITED-SLIP REAR AXLE ASSEMBLY.
THESE VEHICLES WERE BUILT WITHOUT SPECIFIED FRONT SPRING-TO-FRONT AXLE SPACES. IF VEHICLES WERE SUBJECTED TO UNUSUAL JOUNCE CONDITIONS THAT WOULD BE LIKELY TO OCCUR IN OFF-ROAD OPERATIONS, THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT THE DRAG LINK TO STEERING ARM BALL JOINT COULD SEPARATE RESULTING IN LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL. DEPENDING ON THE FRONT TIRE SIZES, IT MAY ALSO BE POSSIBLE UNDER CERTAIN JOUNCE CONDITIONS, FOR THE FRONT TIRES TO COME IN CONTACT WITH ADJACENT COMPONENTS CREATING THE POTENTIAL FOR TIRE DAMAGE.
THE WABCO OR KNORR PARKING BRAKE SPRING CHAMBERS ON THESE VEHICLES ARE INVERTED AND COULD ALLOW WATER TO ACCUMULATE IN THE SPRING CHANBER, WHICH COULD FREEZE IN WINTER WEATHER AND COULD CONTRIBUTE TO CORROSION OF COMPONENTS AND ADVERSELY AFFECT BRAKE OPERATION.
THESE VEHICLES MAY HAVE AN IMPROPERLY ASSEMBLED REAR AXLE. THIS CONDITION COULD RESULT IN REAR WHEEL BEARING FAILURE, CAUSING THE REAR WHEEL AND AXLE TO SEPARATE FROM THE VEHICLE. THIS COULD RESULT IN LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL AND POSSIBLE CRASH.
