The 2017 Audi S3 has 3 recalls, all involving the front passenger airbag system, where software in the airbag control unit can either deploy the airbag with too much force or shut it off entirely when a passenger is present.
The over-deployment issue can occur when a passenger is sitting out of position, perched on the edge of the seat, or reclining, causing the airbag to fire harder than intended in a crash. The opposite problem also exists: the passenger occupant detection system can misread the seat as empty and deactivate the airbag altogether, leaving a seated passenger without that protection in a collision.
