The 1991 BMW 3 Series has 3 recalls, the most serious affecting 318i, 318iC, and 318iS models where the throttle can stick open in extreme cold, leaving the engine unable to return to idle when the driver lifts off the accelerator.
On certain 318i and 318iS models equipped with an airbag, the knee bolster can press against the lower steering column trim cover during a frontal collision, blocking the steering column from moving forward the way it is designed to. That movement is part of how the column absorbs impact energy, so if it is obstructed, the driver faces a greater risk of injury. On 325i models, a loose ground screw in the windshield wiper switch can cause the wipers and washers to behave erratically, reducing visibility in rain or snow when they are needed most.
