The 2001 BMW 325CI has 3 recalls, all involving Takata airbag inflators on both the driver and passenger sides that can explode during deployment, sending metal fragments into the cabin and causing serious injury or death.
Both the driver and passenger frontal airbag inflators are affected. The driver-side inflators involved are Takata NADI units, which can rupture when the airbag deploys, either throwing metal fragments toward occupants or leaving the bag underinflated and unable to cushion a crash properly. Some of these driver-side inflators may have been installed as replacement parts during an earlier repair, meaning vehicles that have already had service work done can still be affected. The passenger-side recall covers non-desiccated Takata PSAN inflators, which carry the same risk of explosive rupture and metal fragmentation in a crash.
