5/5 Overall
NHTSA 5-Star Safety Rating
The 2014 BMW 335i has 5 recalls, the most serious involving three separate airbag inflator defects where a rupture can send metal fragments into the cabin or out of the vehicle, raising the risk of serious injury or death.
All three airbag concerns are distinct. The driver's frontal airbag inflator can explode and propel sharp metal fragments toward the driver or other occupants. The head airbag inflators, which deploy along the side windows, have two separate defects: one where the inflator can fail at a weld joint and either leak gas or rupture, and one where the inflator body itself can rupture. In both side airbag cases, metal fragments can travel into or out of the vehicle. These are the most urgent concerns across all five recalls.
On the fuel system side, the fuel pump can fail without warning and cause the engine to stall unexpectedly while driving, leaving the vehicle without power in traffic. There is also a lighting concern: the side marker lights can fail to illuminate, making the car harder to see from the side at night or in low-visibility conditions, which increases the chance of a side-impact collision with other vehicles or cyclists.
