The 2025 BMW 540i xDrive has 3 recalls, the most serious of which involve a steering spindle that can break mid-drive and a brake system failure that extends stopping distances and can cause loss of vehicle control.
The steering spindle defect causes a sudden, sharp increase in the effort needed to turn the wheel, which can make the car difficult to steer in an emergency. A separate recall covers the power brake assist system, which can fail and require significantly more pedal force to slow the vehicle. When that same system malfunctions, the anti-lock brakes and electronic stability control can also stop functioning, removing the systems that help the driver maintain control during hard braking or slippery conditions. The third recall involves the airbag control module, which may have been assembled incorrectly and can prevent one or more airbags from deploying in a crash, leaving occupants without that protection at the moment they need it most.
