The 2024 BMW 7 Series has two recalls of equal severity: a steering shaft joint that can be damaged during certain maneuvers, causing the wheel to suddenly feel heavier and harder to turn, and a high-voltage battery that can fail and cut power to the wheels or overheat. The steering issue involves the double universal joint on the steering shaft, which can sustain damage that produces an abrupt change in steering feel and makes steering noticeably stiffer, raising the risk of losing control. The battery concern affects a small number of vehicles where the battery cell modules can shut down the high-voltage system entirely, either leaving the driver without drive power or causing the battery to overheat. That overheating can create a fire risk even when the vehicle is parked and switched off.
