The 2020 BMW M550i xDrive has 3 recalls, all involving the rearview camera system, where the backup image can be partially obscured, reduced, or fail to appear entirely when reversing.
All three recalls point to the same real-world concern: when you shift into reverse, the camera display may show a cropped or degraded image, or in some cases, no image at all. A partial image can hide pedestrians, cyclists, or objects that fall just outside the visible portion of the frame. A fully blank screen gives the driver no visual reference for what is directly behind the vehicle. Prior repair attempts did not fully resolve the issue, which is why multiple separate campaigns exist for what is essentially the same backing hazard. None of these recalls affect other vehicle systems, so the engine, brakes, steering, and safety equipment are not involved.
