The 2008 BMW Z4 has 2 recalls, both addressing the same fire risk: the positive crankcase ventilation valve heater can short circuit, overheat, and melt surrounding components, raising the risk of a fire whether the vehicle is running, parked after a drive, or sitting unused.
Because both recalls describe the same underlying defect, there is effectively one issue to be aware of here. The crankcase ventilation system manages pressure inside the engine, and its heater keeps the valve from freezing in cold conditions. When that heater shorts, it can generate enough heat to melt nearby plastic and rubber components, and that heat can persist even after the engine is shut off. Prior repair attempts did not fully resolve the issue, which is why more than one recall campaign exists for this defect.
