NHTSA 5-Star Safety Rating
Complaints for the 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan cluster around three systems: electrical, powertrain, and body structure. On the electrical side, owners most often describe problems with the power sliding doors, both driver and passenger side, reporting doors that open unexpectedly while the van is moving, close immediately after opening, or refuse to open at all. The rear liftgate shows similar erratic behavior. Powertrain complaints center on stalling and failure to accelerate normally, sometimes accompanied by a check engine light, along with engine ticking or internal engine failures at higher mileages. Structure complaints frequently involve the sliding door mechanisms themselves, with owners reporting doors that stick, bind, or lose function entirely without any prior collision. The sliding door issues appear across a notable share of complaints, with owners describing both the power-operated and manually operated versions failing in ways that limit rear-seat exit options.

With Injuries
By System
The 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan has 9 recalls, the most serious involving fuel system fire risks: a deteriorating fuel pump gasket and, on certain wheelchair-accessible conversions, a misrouted fuel line that contacts underbody components, both of which can leak fuel and ignite.
Two separate recalls cover the hood striker bolts loosening over time, allowing the hood to fly open while driving and block the driver's view. On the drivetrain side, the automatic transmission pump can seize and lose hydraulic pressure, cutting drive power unexpectedly. Third-row seat safety accounts for two more recalls: the seatback fasteners may not have been properly tightened during assembly, and in a crash the seatback can separate from the seat frame. Vehicles equipped with Rollx QRT-Deluxe or QRT-Max wheelchair restraints have a separate concern where the restraint system may not secure the wheelchair adequately, allowing it to shift during transit. Finally, certain vehicles came equipped with Kidde fire extinguishers that may fail to discharge properly when needed.
