The 1999 Ford F-350 has 11 recalls, the most serious involving a steering shaft flex coupling that can rotate freely on the shaft, causing partial or complete loss of steering control.
Two recalls address fuel system fire risk: on trucks with 6-inch beds, the fuel tank can be cut by a bracket during a frontal crash, and a broader recall covers both 6-inch and 8-inch bed trucks where fuel can leak after a crash rollover test, in either case creating a fire hazard near an ignition source. A related electrical concern affects SuperCab models, where the positive battery cable can rub against the air conditioning compressor pulley, wear through, and cause a full electrical failure or spark a fire. The airbag sensor on trucks equipped with cast tow hooks was not calibrated for the altered crash forces those hooks produce, meaning the airbags can deploy in lower-speed impacts than intended. There is also a cruise control defect that can cause the throttle to stick, raising the risk of a crash.
On the brake side, three recalls overlap: manual transmission trucks have a parking brake cable input button that can fail and allow the vehicle to roll, and Super Duty single rear wheel trucks may have a parking brake that cannot hold the vehicle on a steep grade. Finally, on SuperCab dual rear wheel wide-frame models, the included scissor jack does not fit securely under the seat and can slide around the cabin during a sudden stop or crash.
