The 2012 Ford F-550 SD has 6 recalls, the most serious being a fire risk affecting trucks modified with certain power take-off assemblies, where oil leaking from the PTO pressure switch can soak into the exhaust's thermal blanket and ignite.
This fire risk appears across four separate upfitter recalls covering trucks modified by different specialty equipment companies, but the underlying hazard is the same in each case. There is also a recall affecting F-550s modified by Farber Specialty Vehicles and equipped with Ricon wheelchair lifts: the lift platform's side plates can crack, allowing the platform to separate and drop against the vehicle's lift door. On the drivetrain side, trucks built with ambulance or fire engine preparation packages have a transmission control module issue that can cause the engine to shut down unexpectedly, requiring a cool-down period before restarting, which can delay emergency response.
