The 2017 Ford Transit has 14 recalls, with the most serious involving the driveshaft flex coupling that connects the transmission to the driveshaft, which can fail and leave the van unable to move while the disconnected shaft damages brake and fuel lines, raising the risk of fire. On vehicles equipped with a trailer tow module, water can corrode the wiring inside the module, causing rapidly flashing turn signals, a blank instrument cluster, an electrical short that can lead to fire, or unintended seatbelt pretensioner deployment. A separate driveshaft concern affects Transit vans that were converted to XL hybrid operation: the universal joint on the front driveshaft can fail and detach, cutting drive power. There is also a parking brake issue where an incorrect service part can allow a damper shield to contact the parking brake cable, causing the brake to fail and the vehicle to roll. Several recalls affect modified or converted Transit vans. Freedman GO-ES foldaway seats installed by multiple upfitters can fail to lock in the upright position, allowing the seatback to move in a crash or sudden stop. On certain wheelchair-lift-equipped vans, a positioning cam can fail and allow the lift platform to rise above the vehicle floor, tipping the wheelchair user inward when exiting. The rearview camera on some Transits can display a distorted, inverted, or blank image when reversing, reducing visibility behind the vehicle.
