2011 GMC Sierra 1500

The 2011 GMC Sierra 1500 has 4 recalls, the most serious being a passenger-side front airbag inflator that can explode and send metal fragments into the cabin, risking serious injury or death.

The airbag inflator issue applies to vehicles originally sold or registered in high-humidity states and territories, including Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, and several US territories. Long-term exposure to heat and humidity can cause the inflator to rupture violently rather than deploy normally, turning the airbag itself into a hazard. Prior repair attempts did not fully resolve the issue, which is why multiple recall filings cover overlapping model years and vehicle populations for the same underlying defect. The fourth recall covers an unrelated piece of equipment: certain fire extinguishers supplied with the vehicle, either with a plastic handle or a push-button indicator, can fail to discharge properly if a fire breaks out, leaving the occupant without a functioning means to suppress a small fire before it grows.
