The 2012 GMC Sierra 1500 has 4 recalls, the most serious being a passenger-side frontal airbag inflator that can rupture and send sharp metal fragments into the cabin, posing a risk of serious injury or death.

This airbag inflator defect is geography-dependent, affecting vehicles originally sold or ever registered in high-humidity states and territories including Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, and several US territories. Prolonged exposure to heat and moisture degrades the inflator over time, making it prone to an explosive rupture during a crash deployment rather than a controlled inflation. Prior repair attempts did not fully resolve the issue, which is why multiple recall campaigns cover this same defect across overlapping model years. The remaining recall involves fire extinguishers installed as optional or dealer-added equipment on certain Sierra HD trucks. The extinguisher's plastic handle or push-button mechanism can fail to operate correctly, leaving the tool unable to discharge when needed in an actual fire.
