The 2002 Honda Odyssey has 8 recalls, all involving the frontal airbags, with the most serious risk being that both the driver and passenger airbag inflators can rupture in a crash and send metal fragments into the cabin, causing serious injury or death.
All eight recalls center on the Takata airbag inflator defect. On both the driver and passenger sides, the inflator propellant can degrade over time, particularly in vehicles exposed to high heat and humidity, causing the inflator to explode with far more force than intended and scatter metal shrapnel toward occupants. Prior repair attempts did not fully resolve the issue across all affected vehicles, which is why multiple campaigns exist for the same underlying problem. There is also a related concern on the passenger side: if the front passenger airbag was replaced at some point, it may have been installed incorrectly and could deploy improperly in a crash, raising the risk of injury even without an inflator rupture.
