The 1999 Jeep Cherokee has 3 recalls, the most serious involving brake rotors that can shed their cast iron wear surface, reducing braking effectiveness, and an airbag control module that corrosion can cause to either trigger the airbags unexpectedly or prevent them from deploying in a crash.
The brake rotor issue applies to vehicles originally sold or registered in certain northeastern and midwestern states where road salt is common, where the wear surface can separate from the hub. The airbag concern stems from water and road salt reaching the control module, with corrosion potentially setting off the airbag warning light as an early sign of the problem. There is also an emissions-related recall where spark plugs with loose centre electrodes can fail and push exhaust emissions above the regulated limit.
