The 1997 Jeep Cherokee has 3 recalls, the most serious involving the airbag control module, where corrosion from water and road salt can cause the airbags to deploy unexpectedly or fail to deploy in a crash. The remaining two recalls both address the same fuel system issue: the fuel level sending unit in the tank can lose accuracy over time, showing more fuel remaining than is actually present. This means the gauge may read well above empty while the tank is nearly dry, and the engine can stall without warning. A sudden stall at highway speeds raises the risk of a collision.
