The 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer has 6 recalls, the most serious involving a front control arm that can detach from the vehicle, causing a sudden and complete loss of steering and handling control.
On the mechanical side, the drive belt tensioner flange can crack, allowing the accessory belt to come free. When that happens, the battery drains and the engine stalls, leaving the car without power in traffic. Vehicles with a sunroof also face a risk of the glass detaching from the assembly while driving and becoming a hazard for other vehicles on the road.
Two recalls address visibility. Unstable voltage in the electrical system can cause the headlights, taillights, and windshield wipers to cut out intermittently. Separately, a blower motor that may have been incorrectly assembled can fail early, reducing the windshield defroster's ability to clear the glass and limiting the driver's forward visibility.
