When cruise control is disengaged normally, the engine should return to idle and the car should slow. If the cable binds against the rear engine compartment cover, that does not happen, and stopping distance increases significantly. Two separate filings cover this same defect, but the underlying problem is one: a safety clip on the cruise control servo motor arm catches on the cover, keeping tension on the cable even after the driver cancels the system.
The two remaining recalls both involve steering. The steering box retaining screws can work loose because assembly lubricant left in the mounting holes prevents them from holding their torque properly, which makes the steering feel less direct and slows its response to driver input. Separately, the bolts that mount the steering rack to the chassis may have been overtightened during assembly, stretching them and causing them to loosen over time. A shifting steering rack results in an off-center steering wheel, imprecise handling, and can damage the rack itself.
