The 2006 Toyota RAV4 has 9 recalls, the most serious involving the rear suspension arms, which can separate and cause a sudden loss of steering and vehicle control.
The rear suspension issue appears across several filings but describes the same underlying problem: the rear tie rod and alignment locking components can loosen, develop rust, and eventually separate while driving. There is also a fire risk on vehicles equipped with certain aftermarket heated seats, where the copper heating element can short circuit and ignite. The power window switch can trap moisture and debris, overheat, and melt the switch assembly, which also raises a fire risk. On the safety equipment side, wiring in the steering wheel assembly can degrade and prevent the driver's airbag from deploying in a crash. The rear outboard seatbelts on this vehicle can contact a sharp edge of the seat cushion frame in a frontal collision, cutting the webbing and leaving those passengers without effective restraint.
