The 2011 Toyota RAV4 has 7 recalls, the most serious involving a rear suspension tie rod that can lose control of its adjustment and cause the driver to lose steering, and a power window switch that can overheat and melt if moisture or debris enter the housing.
On the safety equipment side, side curtain airbags may fail to deploy in a crash due to inflator issues, leaving occupants without that protection. There is also a rear seatbelt concern: in a frontal collision, the outboard rear seat belts can be cut by the seat cushion frame and fail to restrain rear passengers. Vehicles fitted with aftermarket heated seats face an additional risk, as a damaged copper heating element can short circuit and start a fire.
On the mechanical side, water dripping onto the wiper linkage joint can corrode and wear the connection over time until the wiper arm separates from the motor and stops moving across the windshield.
