The 2021 Volvo VNRE has 4 recalls, the most serious being three separate fire risks tied to the electrical system: an overheating cabin heater relay, a windscreen heater relay that can stay energized and overheat, and a high-voltage battery that can short circuit internally.

The cabin heater relay can fail and allow the coolant heater to run beyond safe temperatures, and a separate but related issue involves power cables at the windscreen heater relay that can work loose, causing that relay to stick in the closed position and continuously power the cabin heater until it overheats. The high-voltage battery carries a third fire risk: threaded inserts inside the battery pack can break under excess clamping force, creating a short circuit path within the battery. All three of these issues present a fire risk on a battery-electric vehicle where high-voltage current is present throughout the drivetrain. The fourth recall covers a software and electronics issue affecting trucks equipped with the Bendix EC80 control unit, where electrical interference can cause the module to misread commands or stop functioning entirely. When that happens, several active safety systems can lose effectiveness or drop out completely, including anti-lock brakes, automatic traction control, electronic stability control, adaptive cruise control, and the collision mitigation system.
