The 2022 Volvo VNRE has 5 recalls, all centered on fire and safety system risks in this battery-electric truck, with three separate issues that can lead to a fire in or around the high-voltage battery and cabin heating system.
The fire risks fall into three areas: a coolant line inside the high-voltage battery pack can unseat and leak, leading to an electrical short and fire; threaded fasteners inside the battery pack can break and cause a similar short circuit; and the windscreen heater relay can fail in the closed position, continuing to power the cabin heater until the relay overheats and ignites. There is also a related cabin heater relay defect where the coolant heater itself can overheat and pose a fire risk. On the safety systems side, electrical interference can cause the Bendix EC80 control unit to misread commands or stop responding entirely, which can reduce or cut out anti-lock brakes, automatic traction control, electronic stability control, adaptive cruise control, and the collision mitigation system all at once.
