VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. DURING THE ASSEMBLY PROCESS, THE AIR CLEANER BOX COVER MAY HAVE BEEN DAMAGED, AND A BROKEN PLASTIC PIECE COULD TRAVEL INTO THE INTAKE CHAMBER.
Safety Risk
IF THE PLASTIC PIECE LODGES IN THE THROTTLE BODY, THE THROTTLE COULD STICK IN A PARTIALLY OPEN POSITION. ALTHOUGH THE DRIVER CAN ALWAYS STOP THE CAR BY APPLYING ADDITIONAL BRAKE FORCE, OR BY TAKING OTHER ACTIONS (I.E., SHIFT INTO NEUTRAL, TURN OFF THE IGNITION KEY, ETC.), IF THE CAR CONTINUES TO MAINTAIN SPEED WHEN THE DRIVER IS EXPECTING IT TO SLOW, A CRASH COULD OCCUR.
Remedy
DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE AIR CLEANER BOX FOR DAMAGE. IF DAMAGE IS FOUND, THE DEALER WILL LOCATE AND REMOVE THE BROKEN PLASTIC PIECE, AND REPLACE THE AIR CLEANER BOX LID. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN ON OCTOBER 25, 2001. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT HONDA AT 1-800-999-1009.
ON VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH CRUISE CONTROL, THE CRUISE CONTROL COMPUTER CIRCUIT BOARD MAY DEVELOP A FAULT THAT MAY RESULT IN HIGH ENGINE SPEED WHEN THE ENGINE IS STARTED WITH THE MAIN CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH IN THE "ON" POSITION. IF THE TRANSMISSION (PARTICULARLY AUTOMATIC) IS PUT IN GEAR AND THE DRIVER DOES NOT PRESS FIRMLY ON THE BRAKE PEDAL, THE VEHICLE MAY SUDDENLY ACCELERATE. THIS COULD RESULT IN LOSS OF CONTROL AND A POSSIBLE CRASH.
Safety Risk
No risk description available.
Remedy
CRUISE CONTROL COMPUTER WILL BE INSPECTED AND IF NECESSARY, REPLACED.
On certain vehicles, the rear differential unit pinion nut may not have been tightened correctly during manufacturing. If the pinion nut loosens, it could cause noise, vibration, reduced gear and bearing life, and a differential fluid leak at the pinion seal. In the worst case, the rear wheels could lock up while the vehicle is in motion, causing a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property.
Safety Risk
No risk description available.
Remedy
Dealers will check the torque of the rear differential unit pinion nut and, if necessary, replace the rear differential unit.

On certain vehicles, the steering gear housing cover screw may have been manufactured out of specification and the axial tension between the screw and gear housing may deteriorate over time. This could allow the screw to gradually loosen, which will cause the steering wheel to exhibit noticeable looseness from the steering assembly. If the vehicle continues to be driven in this condition, the screw may eventually come out of the steering gear housing. If large steering inputs are made with the cover screw missing, the pinion shaft may come out of the steering gear. This may result in a loss of steering control, which could lead to a crash causing property damage, personal injury or death.
Safety Risk
No risk description available.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect whether the steering gear cover screw is loose. If it is loose, it will be retightened to the proper specification. In addition, the dealer will install a cover plate to prevent the screw from possibly coming out of the steering gear.

On certain motorcycles, the fuel tank breather hose may have been kinked during assembly. This could result in fuel flow through the breather hose to be obstructed and the fuel tank internal pressure could become abnormally high or low, causing deformation of the fuel tank, or in some cases could lead to a crack in the fuel tank. If the fuel tank develops a crack, fuel leakage can occur, which in the presence of an ignition source, could result in a fire.
Safety Risk
No risk description available.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect and replace the fuel tank breather hose. If the inspection shows that there was obstructed flow through the breather hose caused by a kink in the hose, the fuel tank will also be replaced.

On certain vehicles, long-term exposure to high absolute humidity and temperature, combined with high temperature cycling, may eventually degrade the propellant contained in the passenger-front airbag. This could cause the airbag to deploy with more force than normal. If the airbag inflator ruptures, fragments could be propelled toward vehicle occupants or cause damage to the airbag assembly, preventing its proper function.
Safety Risk
If the vehicle is involved in a crash requiring an airbag deployment, the airbag inflator could rupture and create a risk of injury.
Remedy
Owners will be notified by mail and instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer to have the passenger-front airbag module replaced.
Note: The Canadian climate results in the propellant degrading slowly. This recall is being conducted as a precaution to address future risk. It is expected that all airbag inflators will be replaced before their function would be affected.

On certain vehicles, the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve could fail. If you continue to operate the vehicle after this happens, pieces of the PCV valve may enter the engine and cause an engine failure.
Safety Risk
A sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Subaru will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the PCV valve. Additionally, the replaced PCV valve will be inspected. If the valve is found to have separated, the separator cover and oil pan will be removed. If the separated parts are not located, the engine short block assembly will be replaced.
