On certain vehicles, the power steering return hoses may detach at their connection points. If this happens, power steering fluid can leak. This would result in a loss of power steering assist and power steering fluid could leak onto the road.
Safety Risk
A loss of power steering assist may result in a sudden increase in steering effort, especially at low speeds. This could increase the risk of a crash. A power steering fluid leak could create a road hazard.
Remedy
Mercedes-Benz will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to check the power steering return hose connections. Dealers will install a clamp at the connection point, if needed.

On certain trucks, a nut in the steering system could loosen and cause a loss of steering control. This problem affects trucks equipped with a 4x4 style steering system.
Safety Risk
A loss of steering control would increase the risk of a crash.
Remedy
The company will notify owners by mail. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer to inspect the outboard steering linkage jam nut. If the nut is properly tightened, it will be welded to the adjuster sleeve. If the nut is not properly tightened, the drag link assembly will be replaced.

THE STEERING COLUMN LOWER SHAFT MAY NOT BE PROPERLY ATTACHED TO THE STEERING SHAFT INSULATOR FLANGE. IF THE SHAFT WERE TO SEPARATE, TOTAL LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL WOULD OCCUR WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING, RESULTING IN A POSSIBLE VEHICLE CRASH.
Safety Risk
No risk description available.
Remedy
VEHICLES WILL BE INSPECTED AND, IF NECESSARY, THE STEERING SHAFT ASSEMBLY WILL BE REPLACED.

THE STEERING GEARS HAVE AN IMPROPERLY MACHINED SNAP RING GROOVE. THIS CAN CAUSE A FRACTURE OF THE SNAP RING WITH SUBSEQUENT DAMAGE TO THE RECIRCULATING BALL GUIDE TUBE. ALSO, THE O-RING SEAL IN VEHICLES BUILT AFTER FEBRUARY 1988 DOES NOT MEET SPECIFICATIONS AND IS INADEQUATE, CAUSING INTERIOR LEAKAGE AROUND THE O-RING / GLIDE RING SEAL IN THE STEERING GEAR.
Safety Risk
THE FRACTURE OF THE SNAP RING RESULTS IN INCREASING DETERIORATION OF THE ABILITY TO TURN THE VEHICLE TO THE RIGHT. THE DRIVER WOULD EXPERIENCE INCREASED STEERING EFFORTS OR A "CRUNCHY" FEELING AT THE STEERING WHEEL. THE INADEQUATE O-RING SEAL CAUSES MOMENTARY REDUCTIONS IN POWER STEERING ASSIST AT LOW SPEED AND CERTAIN LEFT TURN MANEUVERS. BOTH CONDITIONS RESULT IN DECREASED STEERING ABILITY.
Remedy
DEALERS WILL REBUILD THE STEERING GEAR. IF A BROKEN SNAP RING IS FOUND DURING REBUILDING, THE STEERING GEAR WILL BE REPLACED WITH A REMANUFACTURED UNIT.
General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2016 Chevrolet Caprice Police Pursuit vehicles (PPV) and SS vehicles. Corrosion of the connector between the electric power steering module and the torque sensor connector may cause a loss of electric power steering assist.
Safety Risk
A greater steering effort would be needed to control the vehicle if power steering is lost, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy
GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the steering gear assembly, free of charge. The recall began May 26, 2020. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is N192285350.

Volvo Trucks North America (Volvo) is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 VNL, VNX, and VNM trucks manufactured from May 11, 2015, through April 18, 2016. The trucks may have been manufactured without a roll pin on the steering shafts. If the roll pin is missing, the lower steering shaft may disconnect from the junction block. Also, the bolt connecting the upper steering shaft to the lower steering shaft may not have been properly tightened. Either condition can lead to separation of the steering shaft.
Safety Risk
Separation of the steering shaft will result in complete loss of steering which may lead to a vehicle crash.
Remedy
Volvo is strongly recommending that the affected vehicles not be driven until the interim remedy is applied. An interim notice was sent to Volvo owners on March 16, 2016, and an interim repair is available now. A second notice was mailed on May 13, 2016. The final remedy is now available. Both remedies are free of charge. Owners may contact Volvo customer service at 1-877-800-4945 opt #1. Volvo's recall numbers for this campaign are RVXX1602 and RVXX1603. On certain vehicles, a connection at the electric power steering (EPS) motor may have been damaged at time of assembly. This could lead to a loss of the steering assist. A loss of power steering assist could unexpectedly increase steering effort which would increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property.
Safety Risk
No risk description available.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the EPS motor.

On certain vehicles, a defect in the power steering pump could cause it to seize after a long period of vehicle non-operation (such as overnight parking) during cold ambient temperatures. This would unexpectedly increase the steering effort force necessary to steer the vehicle at lower vehicle speeds, which could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property.
Safety Risk
No risk description available.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the power steering pump with an improved part.

On certain vehicles, a minute crack may develop on the surface of the steering lock bar, which is a component of the steering interlock system. Such a crack may expand over a period of repeated lock and unlock operations, and eventually the lock bar could break. If this occurs, the interlock system may become difficult to unlock when stationary. If the vehicle is steered to the right while in motion with sufficient lateral acceleration, a broken and loose lock bar may move toward the steering shaft. If the engagement hole in the shaft happens to line up at the specific time the broken lock bar has moved, this could cause the steering wheel lock bar to engage, resulting in a sudden loss of steering control.
Safety Risk
No risk description available.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the steering interlock device.

On certain vehicles equipped with diesel engines, service replacement steering gears, installed after June 30, 2014, may not properly mount to the frame rail due to insufficient clearance. This could result in insufficient clamp load on the joints, which over time may cause fatigue of one or more of the steering gear retention bolts. If the steering gear bolts were to fatigue, one or more of the bolts could fracture, which could result in a loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property.
Safety Risk
No risk description available.
Remedy
Dealers will install spacers between the gear and the frame rail to add clearance and ensure adequate clamp load to the joints.
