On certain vehicles equipped with 6-cylinder diesel engines, the engine control unit may misinterpret a signal in the event of a crash. In the event of a crash, the airbag control unit transmits a signal via the CAN bus network to the engine control unit in order to shut off the engine and fuel pump. Should a crash result in damage that affects the CAN bus, the engine and fuel pump may not be automatically switched off. If a fuel line or hose were also damaged in the crash, fuel leakage might occur, which in the presence of an ignition source, could lead to a fire causing injury and/or damage to property.
Safety Risk
No risk description available.
Remedy
Dealers will re-program the engine control unit with new software.

On certain vehicles equipped with a 2.0 L Nu GDI engine, the connecting rod bearings can become damaged. If this happens, the engine could make abnormal knocking noises and/or the oil pressure warning light may turn on. If you continue to drive the vehicle with these symptoms, the engine could fail and/or a fire could occur. An engine failure can cause a sudden loss of power with an inability to restart.
Note: Only the Optima Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV) models are affected by this recall.
Safety Risk
A sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of a crash. An engine failure could also create the risk of a fire.
Remedy
Kia will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer for an engine inspection test, to determine if there is bearing damage. If damage is found, the engine will be replaced. Dealers will also install a knock sensor detection system (KSDS) software that will prevent engine damage from potential excessive connecting rod bearing wear.
Note: Kia recommends that you should always follow the correct vehicle maintenance schedule, which is printed in the Owner's Manual. If you experience unusual engine noise, reduced power, or a check engine/oil warning light, Kia advises you to immediately visit a Kia dealership to have your vehicle diagnosed.
Certain S10 and S15 vehicles may exhibit fan blade breakage as a result of fatigue caused by engine and/or vehicle induced stress. If this occurs while the hood is open, a person working under the hood of the vehicle, or in the vicinity of the vehicle, could be struck by a blade segment and injured.

Certain motorcycles may have a defective crankcase breather separator. During the molding process, the breather passage may have been blocked by a thin layer of the injected plastic material. This blockage will create a build-up of pressure inside the crankcase and may cause the left side engine seal to be pushed out of position and an oil leak to occur. Oil leakage from the failed seal while riding can spray onto the rear tire or the road, increasing the risk of a crash.
On certain motorcycles, the air filter mounting screws may come loose and fall out. If this were to happen, the screws could get caught in the throttle valve and prevent the operator from reducing engine speed. A stuck throttle could result in a loss of vehicle control and a crash, causing injury or death.
Safety Risk
No risk description available.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the air filter element with an updated version designed to hold the screws securely.
