The 2017 Audi A3 Cabriolet has 3 recalls, the most serious involving the passenger airbag system, which can either deactivate unexpectedly or deploy with too much force, both raising the risk of injury in a crash.
Two recalls affect the passenger airbag. In one, a faulty electrical contact in the passenger occupant detection system can cause it to falsely read a fault and shut the airbag off entirely. In the other, the airbag control unit software can misread the passenger's seating position during a lower-speed crash and fire the airbag with more force than intended, particularly if the passenger is sitting on the edge of the seat or reclined. On the engine side, a software issue in the engine control unit can misread normal flywheel movement at startup as an engine knock, causing the engine to adjust its air and fuel mixture and stall while driving.
