The 2000 BMW 330i has 3 recalls, all involving Takata airbag inflators that can rupture or explode during deployment and send metal fragments into the cabin, posing a serious risk of injury or death to the driver and passengers.
Both the driver and front passenger airbag inflators are affected. On the driver's side, two separate inflator types are covered: one involves replacement inflators installed during prior repairs that can rupture and scatter metal fragments toward the driver, and the other covers original-equipment inflators that can explode during deployment, potentially leaving the airbag underinflated and unable to properly cushion the driver in a crash. The passenger-side inflator uses a propellant that is sensitive to heat and humidity cycling over time, which can cause a violent rupture and send sharp metal pieces toward anyone seated in the front passenger seat.
