The 2015 BMW i3 has 3 recalls, the most serious affecting range-extender hybrid models where the fuel tank vent line can rub against a cable sleeve, develop a hole, and leak fuel vapor near potential ignition sources, raising the risk of fire.
On the airbag side, two separate concerns exist. A manufacturing error in the passenger frontal airbag inflator can prevent the bag from deploying correctly in a low-speed crash, leaving the front passenger with less protection than expected. There is also a compliance issue with the driver's frontal airbag system: in a frontal crash, small-statured adult drivers who are not wearing a seatbelt face a higher risk of neck injury than the federal occupant protection standard allows.
