The 2005 BMW R 1200 ST has 4 recalls, the most serious involving road debris jamming the throttle mechanism and a rear wheel mounting flange that can crack, loosen its bolts, and allow the rear wheel to detach while riding.
Road debris can become lodged between the throttle body and engine block, restricting the throttle cable pulley and causing the rider to lose control of engine speed. The rear wheel issue stems from a cracking mounting flange that can allow the wheel to work loose from the motorcycle entirely, with both defects raising the risk of a crash. Two recalls involve the anti-lock braking system: under rapid and repeated hard braking, ABS function can temporarily drop out, and if the front left brake caliper is removed during service and the ABS sensor cable is rerouted incorrectly, that cable can rub against the brake disc over time and eventually cause a complete loss of ABS.
