The 2020 BMW R 1250 RT has 4 recalls, the most serious involving drivetrain failures that can lock the rear wheel or cause the rear axle assembly to work loose, either of which can cause a crash.

The gearbox input shaft can crack or break under certain riding conditions, and if it does, the rear wheel can seize suddenly with no warning. A separate issue involves the pivot pin connecting the final drive unit to the swingarm: if that pin is damaged, the connection gradually loosens, reducing the motorcycle's stability and making it harder to control, particularly under acceleration or when leaning through corners.

On the brake side, the front brake calipers can seep fluid while the bike sits parked. Over time, enough fluid can escape that brake pressure at the front lever drops noticeably, lengthening stopping distances. There is also a labeling issue with the brake fluid reservoir cap, which may not clearly indicate the correct fluid type or how to refill it properly. Using the wrong fluid or filling the system incorrectly can degrade braking performance in ways that are not immediately obvious until the brakes are needed hard.
