The 2012 BMW X1 has 5 recalls, with the most serious risks being fire and airbag rupture: a fluid leak near the water pump electrical connector can cause a short circuit and start a fire even with the engine off, and the driver's airbag inflator can rupture and send fragments into the cabin during a crash.
A separate wiring connector defect can also cause an electrical short that raises the risk of fire. On the mechanical side, a loss of oil supply to the vacuum pump can cause it to fail, removing brake power assist and significantly extending stopping distances. There is also an electrical concern where the positive battery cable connection to the fuse box can fail while driving, cutting power to the engine and vehicle systems including lights, which can cause the engine to stall and leave the vehicle without propulsion.
