The 2018 BMW X1 has 6 recalls, the most serious being a steering tie rod that can break and cause a sudden, complete loss of steering control.
The tie rod may have been assembled incorrectly and wears prematurely until it fractures, leaving the driver unable to steer. On the structural side, the B-pillar may not absorb enough energy when a head strikes it in a crash, raising the risk of head injury to occupants. Two recalls address the same taillight issue: mounting brackets can crack and allow the taillight housings to loosen or fall off the vehicle entirely, leaving the car without visible brake lights or turn signals and potentially dropping debris into traffic. There is also a compliance recall related to the anti-lock brake warning light, which may not illuminate during startup as required, meaning a driver would have no dashboard indication if the ABS system were malfunctioning.
