The tie rod connects the steering gear to the front wheels, and if it fractures while driving, the driver loses the ability to steer the vehicle. On the structural side, the B-pillar, the vertical support between the front and rear doors, may not absorb enough impact energy if a passenger's head strikes it in a crash, which can increase the severity of head injuries. There is also a lighting concern: attachment brackets on the taillight housings can crack, allowing one or both taillights to loosen and potentially fall off the vehicle entirely, leaving the car invisible to following traffic at night or depositing a piece of the car on the road.
